This has been a long saga, and when I heal up, it will all be over.
It was December, 2003, when I walked to the hospital just three blocks away. It was evening and I knew that the English speaking doctor would be on duty. I had a problem that I wanted to ask about. However, before I got to the hospital I started to get this chest pain and so I determined to mention it as it had occurred on a number of occasions.
So, when I saw the doctor I said, "First I want to ask you why I get this chest pain every time I walk briskly?" I don't know whether I ever got to mention the complaint that I had come for, I just know that before I could say anymore I was hooked up to an ECG apparatus and all that the staff could concentrate on, was my heart.
That episode resulted in me being shipped off to the American Hospital in Beijing where I underwent every possible heart test that you can imagine, only to be told that there was nothing wrong with my heart. It cost the insurance more than AU$10.000, but the pain remained, gradually occurring more frequently.
Fast forward to 2011. It was now becoming a very frequent occurrence and some friends took me, to what they considered to be the best cardiac hospital in our city. After initial questioning by a cardiac specialist I was sent to the respiratory department to see whether they could find anything wrong. No one could determine why I had this problem. Eventually I was sent for an MRI which then showed a whole list of problems.
The same doctors who yesterday could not find anything wrong now told me that I was virtually on death's door. That was not an acceptable diagnosis and the insurance this time medivaced me to HongKong where I again underwent every possible cardiac test you can imagine. And the result was the same, "There is nothing wrong with your heart!" The insurance paid in access of AU$10,000 and I went home again and continued to suffer chest pain each time I exerted myself, especially when walking briskly.
There was a doctor who suggested acupuncture, and being at the end of my wits, I had acupuncture. It does not heal anything, but it gives amazing relief from pain. I could walk any distance without pain.
