I soon discovered that the first week in January had the least bookings and / or appointments. Then, when I learned that my friend would be in the city on New Year's day, we decided that she would pick me up before going home.
She picked me up in the afternoon and we hung around till tea time, then went to my favourite little Chinese Restaurant to eat. Then the long ride to Hastings. With Daylight Savings in force, we arrived at her home well before dark. It was a good beginning to the week. The forecast of beautiful summer weather did not hinder us either.
Well, it is not the sand you have in the child's sand box or what is washed up at the beach. It is actually builders' loam. It is brought in and compacted. Around that, with predetermined dimensions, are built the scaffold to hold it in place while the next layer is built on top, and so all the way up. Then they stand on the second layer from the top and sculpt the top layer, then remove the scaffold to sculpt the next layer down, until it is all done.
You must admit that it is amazing how they manage to get the extremities to hold out on their own, notwithstanding that it is sprayed with a water repelling spray which also stops it from blowing away. It is nonetheless a remarkable piece of work.
A collection of photos is the well deserved result.
